Compensation instruments

Compensation Notes and Bonds

Those are non-monetary means of payment with wide application in the Bulgarian market. Issued in the end of 1998, they are used for:

-         payment of privatization installments

-         interest payment defined by the Law for Settling Unattended Credits (ZUNK) (applies only to compensation and housing compensation notes)

-         auctions for agricultural land from the state land fund (applies only to nominal compensation notes)

-         participation in the mass privatization

-         payment of privatization through the BSE

The Law for Deals with Compensatory Instruments, enacted by the Bulgarian Parliament on April 26, 2002, defines three types of compensation instruments: compensation notes, housing compensation notes, and nominal compensation bonds. Compensation instruments can be nominal or non-nominal and are all registered in the Central Depository. The ownership of compensation instruments can be freely transferred using the BSE-Sofia.

Owners of housing compensation notes issued on the base of housing savings deposits (the so-called “interest points”) can also trade them on the Bulgarian exchange.
